The Killeen City Council Tuesday night voted to support a proposed 2 percent countywide hotel/motel occupancy tax.

The proposal would allow the city to receive a direct 17 percent rebate of its portion of the tax revenues. Officials say those funds would create a permanent revenue source the city could draw from for improvement projects. On a county level, revenues would go toward improving and expanding the Bell County Expo Center.

Tuesday's vote came after Mayor Scott Cosper negotiated the rebate deal with County Judge Jon Burrows. The approval was not unanimous, however. The lone dissenter, Mayor Pro Tem Elizabeth Blackstone, said she voted against the measure after receiving a number of phone calls from citizens opposed to it.

The Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce, Temple Chamber of Commerce, Temple Economic Development Corporation, Belton EDC, and the Harker Heights, Belton, and Temple City Councils have all recently approved resolutions in support of the tax.
