Killeen Animal Services tells citizens to be cautious around unfamiliar animals after a skunk captured in the city tested positive for rabies.

The animal was captured in the Yowell Ranch subdivision on Monday and shipped to the Texas Department of Health Bureau of Laboratories for testing. Animal Services received noticed of a positive diagnosis on Wednesday. Officials don’t know if the skunk came into contact with any other animals or humans before capture.

Officials are asking citizens to contact the Killeen Police Department at (254) 501-8830 if they see any animal that appears to be sick or acting unusual. Citizens are asked not to attempt to handle or capture any animals, as they could be contagious.
