Temple police have released new details about the death of a toddler who was struck by a car and killed early Sunday morning.

Police, fire, and ambulance crews were called to the 3500 block of South General Bruce Drive shortly at 2:09 AM. When they arrived, they found a two-year-old victim unresponsive. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

While investigating the scene, responders received a report of a child missing from a home in the 700 block of South 35th St. An officer responded to the address on 35th and obtained a photograph of the missing child. He sent a copy of the photograph to officers at the scene of the fatal accident, who confirmed that the victim was the missing child.

Investigators learned that the child had been left in the care of a babysitter while his parents were out. The sitter told police she last saw the child around 1 AM.

Police have not released the name of the toddler, his parents, or the sitter, nor have they said how or why the child may have left his home.

Temple PD Public Information Officer Shawana Neely said in a statement Monday morning that the investigation continues and updates will be released as they become available.
