If you're looking for a fun and fulfilling way to honor local veterans next week, Temple's VFW Post 1820 is the place to be.

Veterans and the public are invited for a free lunch of hot dogs and chips on Saturday, November 12 from 1pm to 3pm. While the lunch is to honor World War II and Korean War vets, all veterans are welcome, as are members of the public who want to show their gratitude and support.

Stick around after lunch for a flag retirement ceremony, during which worn out American flags will be honorably and respectfully retired. If you've never been to a flag retirement ceremony or want to take a young person to see one for the first time, this is an excellent opportunity. (If you have a worn flag in need of a dignified retirement, you can drop it off at the post, which has two flag dropboxes outside, available 24/7.)

If you want to have some fun the night before. Johnny and the Roustabouts will be performing live at the post Friday night, November 11. Tickets are $15 and include dinner and a non-alcoholic drink, and the bar will be open. Tickets can be purchased at the post (3302 Airport Rd) or online at Eventbrite.

If you can't make it to either event but want to have a good time and support local veterans, keep in mind that the VFW is open to the public year-round. Post 1820 offers a $5 breakfast buffet with eggs cooked to order every Saturday. They host a pool league and bingo as well, and the bar is open to the public and offers the lowest prices in town.

Since the post is a non-profit entity, the majority of proceeds from activities at Post 1820 go to support local veterans in need and local charities, with the rest going toward upkeep of the facilities. They even have multiple halls available for rent.
