KWTX is reporting that the former Ft Hood Commander Robert Shoemaker, Shoemaker High School's namesake, has died at the age of 93 years old.

He was a West Point graduate and spent 36 years in the Army. He first came to Ft Hood in 1970.

He received the West Point Distinguished Graduate Award in 2004.

He was also inducted into the Army Aviation Hall of Fame in 1983.

Locally, after retiring from the Army in 1982, he served as a Bell County Commissioner for eight years working to develop a relationship between civilian and military officials.

He was also a key supporter in the efforts to get a four year university campus in Killeen which became Texas A&M University-Central Texas.

It was the year 2000, that after all he'd done for our country, and our community, that the Killeen ISD gave their new high school his name. It was just this past February that the high school celebrated his birthday.

General Shoemaker is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Tuke.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
