‘Batman’ Stars Burt Ward, Julie Newmar and More React to Adam West’s Passing
We’re still reeling from the loss of Adam West, TV’s original Batman and “Bright Knight” icon of superhero fans. The actor lost a battle with leukemia this weekend, and now Batman co-stars Julie Newmar and Burt Ward weigh in, along with Family Guy producers and many more.
West had his place permanently etched into pop culture over the years, but will always be remembered for his earnest and distinct take on the Caped Crusader. To wit, Boy Wonder co-star Burt Ward (who West himself personally approved) offered his remembrance of the actor to Variety, saying:
I am devastated at the loss of one my very dearest friends. Adam and I had a special friendship for more than 50 years. We shared some of the most fun times of our lives together. Our families have deep love and respect for each other. This is a terribly unexpected loss of my lifelong friend. I will forever miss him. There are several fine actors who have portrayed Batman in films. In my eyes, there was only one real Batman that is and always will be Adam West. He was truly the Bright Knight.
Catwoman herself, Julie Newmar also weighed in on the 88-year old star’s loss:
Stellar, exemplar, a king to the end. He was bright, witty and fun to work with. I will miss him in the physical world and savor him always in the world of imagination and creativity. He meant so much to people – A friend said: ‘The father that we wanted.’ That is a great gift, no matter how you live it.
Social media also lit up with remembrances and tributes to the actor from collaborators new and old. Here’s Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane and writer David Goodman, The Big Bang Theory executive producer Bill Brady, fellow Batman icons Mark Hamill and Val Kilmer, Family Guy voice and Batman ‘66 comic writer Ralph Garman, and Gotham star Robin Lord Taylor:

RIP Adam West. Great, sweet, nutty guy. And it's saying something that we look the same age in this photo. pic.twitter.com/9TNNm3cy5c

Gotham City has lost a legend. Adam West was every bit as gracious and loving in person as you'd expect. @therealadamwest

Farewell Adam West. You were MY Batman. Such a super funny, cool, charismatic actor. Loved the show as a kid, still love the show now. POW! pic.twitter.com/6QAZnOhtMs

RIP to a childhood hero who showed us Batman was kind and good and flawed and funny. pic.twitter.com/8eSYWk2bkd

Rest in Peace Adam West. We met once in 1987 and I was too embarrassed and too foolishly "cool" to tell you what you meant to my childhood.

Holy heartbreak Batman. Adam West was a big part of my childhood. We were acquaintances in my adulthood. A wonderful man who will b missed.

Mr. West, thank you for all those afternoons you helped me and other 70's kids dream about the fun of being a hero. RIP, good sir.

Fittingly, West himself also shared a collection of Batman photos a year ago that have since begun making the rounds:

West is survived by his wife, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Here’s to one of the truest superheroes out there.
