The following is a statement from local authorities in Temple as posted around 9:00 PM Saturday evening:

Temple Police Department and Temple Fire and Rescue are on the scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision near the intersection of FM 317 and Poison Oak.

Initial investigation indicates a silver Nissan 4 door was traveling southbound when a deer entered the roadway from the west running eastbound. The driver of the Nissan was unable to avoid colliding with the deer, causing the deer to vault into the northbound lanes. The deer entered the windshield of a northbound Hyundai 4 door striking the driver.

First responders arriving on scene administered first aid and CPR to the driver of the black vehicle but sadly the driver died at the scene. Justice of the Peace Theodore Duffield pronounced the victim deceased at the scene and has ordered an autopsy.

The occupants of the grey Nissan were not injured in the collision and the passenger of the Hyundai was transported to Baylor Scott & White with non life-threatening injuries.p

The investigation is ongoing by the Temple Police Department Traffic Collision Reconstruction Unit.

FM 317 is closed from the north city limits of Belton to Poison Oak Drive while officer conduct their initial investigation. Travelers are encouraged to find alternate routes and avoid the area.

Thew name of the deceased will be released following notification of the next of kin. Our thoughts prayers are with the families of tonight's victims.
