Belton High School Football Readies for Second Round Playoff Matchup Against Powerhouse Skyline
The uniforms for Dallas Skyline may be baby blue, but there's nothing small about this powerhouse of a football team. Dallas Skyline enters Saturday's matchup against Belton at Waco ISD Stadium undefeated, and they've made it look easy.
Belton is coming off a huge playoff win in Bob Shipley's first year as head coach. Many picked Garland to win the game, and Coach Shipley made sure to mention that in his postgame speech on the field. Belton racked up 50 points in a 1st round win at Baylor's McLane Stadium.
Everything offensively clicked for the Tigers in the 1st round as Shane Stafford passed for 300+ yards, Kavan Johnson ran for 136 yards and 3 scores and receiver Coby Potvin had over 100 yards receiving and a TD on just 4 receptions. Everything worked well on a cold, wet day in Waco.
For Belton to pull off the upset against the #4 team in the state (#33 in the nation) it'll take a complete offensive effort much like the 1st round win over Garland and turnovers galore on defense. This is a Skyline team that hasn't played a game with less than a 26-point score margin or scored fewer than 41 points since September.
Belton plays Saturday at 2:30 at Waco ISD Stadium. It's a much smaller venue for a much bigger game than last Saturday. Belton hasn't won two playoff games since the 90s, and Coach Shipley's Tigers need to play near-perfect football to get there. A lot of people doubted Belton last weekend, so I'm going to let the outcome decide itself on the field and hope the Tigers can survive to play beyond Thanksgiving for the first time in any current Belton Tiger's lifetime.
