The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a group within the Chinese People's Liberation Army may be responsible for cyber attacks on 115 corporations throughout the past decade. The Chinese government is denying the allegations and claiming to be victim to US cyber attacks, but US network security firm Mandiant Corp. claims that a group of Chinese hackers based in Shanghai known simply as Unit 61398 has been carrying out network raids on US firms with support from the Chinese government since at least 2006. Mandiant even says it has pinpointed the exact location of the building from which the attacks are carried out, though they also believe more groups may be active under Chinese supervision. The hacking attacks are believed to be mostly economically motivated, giving Chinese firms an advantage over competitors in a wide range of trade activities, as well as stealing vital information from companies in the US and other countries. The Obama administration said Wednesday that it plans to take action against China if hacking attacks continue. These attacks, they say, pose both economic and national security threats and could be treated in a similar fashion to concrete military-style attacks.
