Released by the Corsicana Police Department:

CORSICANA, TX - At approximately 8:46 p.m. on Wednesday, the Corsicana Police Department's Communications Center received a 911 call from the thirty-five year old father of a two year old boy.  The father reported that his son had just shot himself in the head with a handgun.  Corsicana EMS paramedics and police officers were then dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of N. 30th Street.   Upon their arrival EMS transported the child to Navarro Regional Hospital where the child was then transported by PHI air ambulance to Children's Hospital.

A little after 11 p.m., the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office contacted the Corsicana Police Department to advise the child had died at Children's Hospital.

The investigation surrounding the circumstances of the shooting is continuing.  However, all information and physical evidence indicates the shooting was accidental when the child found a handgun inside a bedroom and then discharged it, striking himself in the head.  The child's father was reported to have been in a walk-in closet of the bedroom where the shooting occured at the time of the shooting.  No one else was home at the time of the shooting.

Child Protective Services and the Navarro County District Attorney's Office have been informed of the investigation.

When the investigation is concluded it will be referred to the District Attorney's Office to review for consideration of criminal charges.
