Fort Hood officials have released the name of a soldier who died of an apparent gunshot wound in Harker Heights on Wednesday, May 14.

40-year-old Maj. James D. Mullin of Harker Heights entered active duty service in January of 1997 as an armor officer, and was assigned to Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since November of 2013. Mullin served in Afghanistan from February of 2004 to April of 2005, and again from February of 2012 to July of 2012.

According to a press release, Mullin's awards and decorations include: two Bronze Stars, one Meritorious Service Medal, five Army Commendation Medals, six Army Achievement Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Air Assault Badge and Parachutist Badge.
