Yesterday afternoon in Copperas Cove, smoke was seen all over the city and in some areas ash was falling to the ground which caused some alarm among residents. We now know the cause.

According to a press release from Copperas Cove Deputy Fire Chief Gary Young, it was determined that a wildfire burning on Fort Hood was the cause of the smoke and ash over the city and there was no cause for alarm.

Fort Hood officials released that following statement this morning:

Due to ongoing firefighting efforts on the Fort Hood range, Fort Hood officials have suspended live-fire gunnery exercises for all munitions until further notice. This training pause enables maximum flexibility to safely conduct ongoing air and ground firefighting operations. Currently, the fire poses no immediate risk of leaving the installation boundary, nor does it pose an immediate threat to life or property. - Fort Hood Press Center
