Governor Rick Perry has ordered another special session to deal with issues including the controversial abortion bill that was defeated by an hours-long filibuster and rowdy crowd of demonstrators Tuesday night.

But the abortion bill is not the only major issue that was left in limbo after the close of the last session early Wednesday. Senate Bill 23 would mandate that 17-year-olds convicted of murder be sentenced to life in prison with parole. Under current law, 17-year-old defendants are considered adults and receive a sentence of life without parole, but the U.S. Supreme Court banned that mandatory sentence for juveniles.

The special session will also deal with Texas transportation issues.

Of course, the abortion bill (Senate Bill 5) will be the most talked-about issue not just in Texas, but nationwide. Gov. Perry said of the session, “We will not allow the breakdown of decorum and decency to prevent us from doing what the people of this state hired us to do.”
