A new stakeholders group met for the first time on Wednesday to discuss the restoration of Nolan Creek, which runs through Harker Heights, Killeen, and Nolanville.

Excessive amounts of E. coli, a bacteria found in animal feces, were found in the creek following a study in 2003 and 2010. A $450,000 program, funded by Killeen and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, was used to help the Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research monitor pollution in the creek.

Environmentalists hope to identify the major sources of the pollution and establish better practices for properties feeding into the Nolan Creek watershed.

The goal of the meeting with watershed stakeholders was to find further ways to decrease pollution in the creek.

A similar project in 2004 successfully cleaned a separate section of Nolan Creek.
