Little River-Academy Police Chief Lee Dixon was shot and killed Thursday evening while responding to a call.

Dixon responded alone to a report of a man with a gun at a home in the area of Main Street and Allison around 5:10 pm. Shortly after requesting assistance, Dixon was shot on the porch of the home and authorities began receiving 911 calls about the shooting.

David Risner, reportedly a former police officer, was arrested at the scene. Risner was arrested in December of 2013 in Temple for failure to identify and resisting arrest. He was released on bond the same day. He was also arrested in 2008 for deadly conduct-discharge of a firearm, but records do not provide clear details.

Dixon was transported to Dallas Friday for an autopsy before being escorted by collegues to Temple’s Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. A service is tentatively planned for Thursday.

Dixon began his service as Chief of Little River-Academy PD last month after replacing Troy Hess, who was voted out office by the City Council in March.

Congressman John Carter spoke in memory of Dixon on the floor of the United States House of Representatives Friday morning.
