Most Texans Since 2008 to Travel for Labor Day

IRVING, Texas (AP) — AAA Texas projects that more than 2.5 million Texans will hit the road or take wing for the Labor Day 2014 holiday.

The auto club said in a statement that the projection would be the highest number of Texans traveling for Labor Day since 2008 and a 1.9 percent increase from 2013.

The club predicts that 2.1 of those Texans traveling between Thursday and Monday will do so by auto. It credits labor market improvements, positive consumer expectations for disposable income and increased housing values for the increased travel. Consumer spending has exceeded income growth, showing that more people are willing to take on debt to finance their summer's-end holidays.

Most travelers will find gas prices at their lowest levels for the season since 2010.
