Obama, Hill Leaders Fail to Solve Shutdown Impasse

WASHINGTON (AP) — A partial government shutdown is in its third day after a White House meeting among President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders yielded no reports of progress.

After the Wednesday evening session, Republicans were not backing off their insistence that Obama accept some curbs on the health care law he won in 2010. Democrats said they were willing to hold wide-ranging negotiations on the budget but first want the GOP-led House to agree to end the shutdown, as the Democratic-controlled Senate has voted to do.

House Speaker John Boehner (BAY'-nur) is giving no indication he will do that. Instead, the House plans to continue voting Thursday on bills aimed at reopening small, popular government programs, including veterans' benefits and pay for members of the National Guard and Reserves.
