After having the whole world believing Lane Kiffin was taking control of the University of Houston Cougars football program, today the announcement comes and it's not Kiffin at all.

Major Applewhite, the offensive coordinator under the now-departed for UT Tom Herman will be the next Cougars coach.

This leaves the door open for Lane Kiffin to join his old assistant Ed Orgeron at LSU, if he would want to go. Interestingly, Applewhite is a native of Baton Rouge. Again, there's that tangled web.

Many thought Applewhite was headed back to UT where he played as quarterback and started his coaching career. Yet in light of the drama at Baylor, there was probably little chance of that, as Applewhite revealed publicly years after the fact he had been disciplined for an inappropriate relationship with a trainer at the Fiesta Bowl in 2009, while he was assistant head coach to Mack Brown. With that on his record, some thought a head coaching job was not within his grasp at the immediate time.

Why do I get the impression that the good old boy network has all of these moves choreographed like a chess match? It seems that way, or the gods of Footballdom have choreographed everything well in advance.
