Two Copperas Cove ISD schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution Tuesday after police learned a gun may have been stolen in a nearby car burglary.

In a Facebook post, district officials said the burglary occurred near Copperas Cove Junior High School, and that a firearm was believed to have been taken. Both Cove Jr. High and Mae Stevens Early Learning Academy were locked down "out of an abundance of caution."

Shortly before 1:30 PM, officials said the lockdown had been lifted, but police were maintaining a presence at the schools to ensure staff and student safety.

It does not appear that any threats against the schools were made.
