UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Thomas Gene Smethers of Killeen. Police have not yet named a suspect.


Police from Copperas Cove and Killeen processed a Cove motel room Wednesday evening for evidence connected to a deadly shooting at a Walmart Supercenter earlier that day.

A SWAT team arrived at the High Five Inn on South W.S. Young Drive around 6PM to serve a warrant to the guest of a particular room. They first ordered that anyone in the room surrender, but received no response. They then entered the room, only to disover no one was inside.

Once they confirmed that the room was empty, officers began collecting evidence. They remained on the scene until around 7:30 PM.

The search came about 14 hours after a man was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter at 2720 E U.S. 190 in Copperas Cove. Witnesses told police one man fled the scene after shooting the victim, who died shortly after being transported to a hospital. The victim's name and age have not been released, and police have not publically named a suspect.
