Do you believe in karma? I do. There's some form of it also known as the golden rule in every single one of the world's religions.  I also believe in the inherent goodness of humankind. All people have a potential for good, and if set upon the proper path people engage in correct behavior towards each other. I firmly believe that.

So when I came across this story yesterday, I knew I just had to share it. Someone who simply does the right thing day in and day out gets rewarded for it. It's a real heart warmer coming out of Little Elm. God bless everyone involved in this!

If you're pressed for time I'll sum it up: a young man works as a server – what we used to call a waiter, which for whatever reason has fallen out of fashion – at a major chain restaurant serving "sit down food."  Okay, it's Applebee's. He's known for being irrepressibly cheerful all the time, a truly hospitable person.  In the service industry, that can only be seen as an asset.

According to a report by WFAA–TV, the server, Kasey Simmons, 32, attuned to the needs of others as he is, noticed a woman at the grocery store who was not in the best of moods. She was downright melancholy by his observation.

Wanting to ease whatever was on her mind, Simmons offered to pay for her groceries. As a matter of fact, he insisted on it. Without owing a thing, the lady left on cloud nine.

The next night in the restaurant where he works, a customer and her family came in asking to be seated in Kasey Simmons's section. Although the customer placed an order amounting to 37 cents - water with a splash of flavor added - the family quickly left after charging the bill on a credit card.

The family could have paid the bill with spare change. Yet the water order was not why they were in the restaurant. They were there to leave a tip specifically for Simmons.  As it turns out, the woman whom Simmons showed kindness to the night before was the mother of the woman who placed the water order. And the tip left was an appreciation for the kindness shown by Simmons to the elderly lady. Her mood was dour because it was the anniversary of her husband's death.  The waiter's generosity could not have come at a more appropriate time. This was explained to Simmons in a note, which also explained that the tip given to him was not a mistake.

The family tipped him $500. You read that right.

Aren't people wonderful?
