Danny Wayne Gilkey, 40, of Temple was in the Bell County Jail Friday after police say he tried to lure a young boy away from his home on Avenue M Thursday morning.

Police were called to the 1100 block of West Avenue M around 6:13 AM Thursday after a report of an attempted kidnapping.

The potential victim, a young boy, said he was walking to his bus stop when a white man wearing a black jacket, grey pants, and black shoes identified himself as a police officer and asked the boy to help him search for a missing girl.

The boy fled to his home when the man began advancing toward him and told his mother what happened.

Officers later spotted Gilkey in the 900 block of West Avenue M wearing the clothing the boy described. Police took a photo of Gilkey and showed it to the boy, who positively identified the man as the potential kidnapper.

Gilkey was booked into the Bell County Jail Thursday at 7:05 AM and charged with Impersonating a Public Servant - a third degree felony. His bond was set at $50,000.

Temple police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the boy's encounter with Gilkey to call them at (254) 298-5500.
