Temple Opens Emergency Warming Center for the Homeless and Distressed

UPDATE 11/13: We have learned that Temple has deactivated its Emergency Warming Center as of 9:00 a.m. this morning, citing the National Weather Service's advisory that temperatures would warm to above the necessary chill factor to keep the Center open.

As November temperatures continue to plunge, the City of Temple is taking emergency measures to ensure the safety of its less fortunate residents.

Temple to Open Emergency Warming Center

The Temple Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is activating the Emergency Warming Center Plan today to provide a temporary warming space for homeless or distressed persons in the city.  This decision is based on data from the National Weather Service on the sustained nighttime predicted wind chill factor.

Warming Center location is:

• Transformation Station, 503 East Central Avenue (men)

The warming center will be open Wednesday, November 12, 2014, 5:00 p.m. through Thursday, November 13, 2014, 9:00 a.m.  Women and children needing warming resources should contact Temple Police Department for assistance.

Warming centers are possible due to the efforts of the City of Temple Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the not-for-profit Temple Emergency Warming Center Coalition (TEWCC), and the 2-1-1 System.

Warming Centers in Temple provide a place to bring people that would normally be out in the elements on an extremely cold evening indoors during the coldest hours of the night.  Warming Centers provide a warm area for refuge, water, blankets, toilet facilities, and limited hygiene items.
