A fire that destroyed a playground at Temple’s James Wilson Park was intentionally set, a fire official announced Wednesday evening.

According to Thomas Pechal with Temple Fire and Rescue, the fire at 2205 Curtis B. Elliot Drive was set shortly before 6 PM Wednesday and was initially thought to be a grass fire.

Firefighters arrived at 6:03 PM and quickly extinguished the flames, but the playground was a total loss. Investigators estimate it will cost around $250,000 to replace. A nearby tree was also damaged.

No injuries were reported.

Fire investigators believe the fire was intentionally set and are asking anyone with information to call them at (254) 298-5682 or Temple Police at (254) 298-5500.
