HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Texas death row inmate is set for execution Tuesday evening for abducting a Houston couple, raping the woman and killing the man.

The U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year refused to review the case of 49-year-old Jamie McCoskey, and his attorneys had no last-day appeals in the courts to try to delay the punishment in Huntsville.

McCoskey has an extensive criminal record and was on a form of probation when authorities say he abducted 21-year-old Michael Dwyer and Dwyer's fiancee. The couple was returning to their Houston residence after shopping 22 years ago this week when McCoskey abducted them.

Dwyer was stabbed nearly two dozen times. McCoskey's distinctive 6-foot-7 height and square facial features led to his arrest.

His attorneys long held he was too mentally ill for execution.
