Despite being one of the most gun friendly states, Texas law still forbids the open carry of handguns. That could soon change.

The Associated Press reports that at least six open carry bills have been filed ahead of the next session of the Texas legislature. Governor Elect Greg Abbott has reportedly vowed to sign into law any bill that makes it to his desk.

The passage of such a bill seems like a sure thing, but failed attempts to allow concealed handguns on college campuses in recent years may indicate a hard fight ahead.

Currently, Texas laws allow for the open carry of long guns, but all handguns must be concealed.
