TheGuardian.com is reporting a Texas Senate committee recently passed a resolution to make the cannon the official weapon of Texas!

The Texas resolution to adopt the cannon as the state weapon comes from the story of the "Come and Take It" cannon in Gonzales, Texas.

Some argue the Bowie knife (named after Alamo defender Jim Bowie) ought to have the honor, while others argue the 1847 Colt Walker pistol would do. What do you think Texas' Official State Weapon Should be?

Cannons have been a big deal in Texas since the 1800's. There is a reason the cannon is on the water tower in Gonzales, that canons decorate parts of the capital city of Austin, and that since the 50's they have fired off a canon at the University of Texas before the football games... it's part of Texas! A fine official weapon it would make!
