Belton, TX - One week after a dominating performance against Wesley College, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor won their American Southwest Conference opener over Sul Ross State 40-18 in a rain-soaked game at Crusader Stadium in Belton on Saturday night.

The Cru (4-0, 1-0 ASC) rolled up 443 yards of total offense with 242 of those coming on the ground behind sophomore running back Michael Carpenter (Bosqueville HS), with 151 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown. Carpenter, filling in for injured starter Elijah Hudson, also added 3 catches for 60 yards and a score. Sophomore quarterback Zach Anderson (Odem HS) ran for 121 yards on 15 carries and went 11 for 16 passing for 160 yards and another score.

The Cru defense gave up a season-high 353 yards of total offense to the Lobos (0-4, 0-1) but forced seven turnovers in the game and scored its first defensive touchdown of the season. Senior cornerback Brodrick Crain (Belton HS) punched the ball loose from the Lobos' Brian Thomas, scooped it up and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown just seven seconds into the third quarter to open the scoring for the Cru in the second half. Junior linebacker Deshon Kinsey (Mart HS) led the Cru defense with 13 tackles and Crain added nine to go with an interception and his fumble return for a touchdown.
