A woman’s life was likely saved by her desk after a truck plowed into a building in Temple Thursday.

The truck ran head-on into the Temple Economic Development Corp. building at the corner of Central Avenue and First Street shortly after noon. An employee working in the building was trapped behind her desk after the impact until roofer working at the scene pulled her out.

The two workers with Masterson Roofing, Bill Potter and Mike Johnson, credit the sturdy desk with preventing the woman from sustaining serious injuries.

“I think that desk saved her life,” Potter told the Temple Telegram. “She was pretty much smashed in behind it, but that truck would not have stopped without something like that being there.”

The woman was transported to Scott and White Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver and passenger in the truck declined transport to the hospital. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
