UPDATED May 12, 2016, 12:27 PM: Palo Alto Middle School in Killeen was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after reports of gunfire in a nearby neighborhood.

Shortly after 9:30 AM, police received calls about a disturbance at a house on Riverrock Drive. Witnesses told responding officers that they heard gunshots from inside the home, then saw an elderly man exit the home and begin using a hammer to break the windows of vehicle parked in the driveway.

The man was inside the house when officers arrived. Police surrounded the home, evacuated nearby houses, and closed off Riverrock and Tallwood drive.

After hearing a gunshot from inside the home, police entered and found the elderly man dead in the garage.

Police have not yet released the man's name, and it is unknown if anyone else was in the home.

Due to the close proxmity of the home to the south side of Palo Alto's campus, the school was placed on lockdown from around 10 AM to 11:10 AM. In a media release, school officials said the building was secure and classes resumed shortly after the incident on Riverrock ended.
