Belton teens interested in a career in law enforcement will soon have the opportunity to experience a taste of police work.

Students age 14 to 20 who've completed 8th grade can now apply for Belton Police Department's Law Enforcement Explorer Academy, which will be held from June 5 to 16.

Participants will receive training in areas including patrol tactics, forensics, communications, and criminal investigation. In a media release, BPD Public Information Officer Paul Romer said the skills teens learn during the academy will later be put to the test at formal competitions against other Explorer posts. Romer said participants can also remain active with the department, assisting officers during parades and other events.

Applications will be accepted from March 2 to May 5, and can be picked up at BPD Headquarters, 711 E 2nd Ave, or obtained from any school resource officer.
