Texas Senator John Cornyn has confirmed rumors that he was being considered to fill the role of FBI Director by rejecting the position.

The Texas Tribune reports that Cornyn has chosen to remain in the Senate as the majority whip in order to continue to "fight for a conservative agenda in the U.S. Senate,", but said he is happy to help find a replacement for the recently fired James Comey.

"Now more than ever the country needs a well-credentialed, independent FBI director," Cornyn was quoted in the Tribune. "I’ve informed the administration that I’m committed to helping them find such an individual."
