UPDATE: Authorities have confirmed that the remains found in Lake Belton Tuesday afternoon are those of Scott Weinhold.

Authorities are working to identify remains found as teams searched Lake Belton for missing Fort Hood soldier Scott Weinhold Tuesday afternoon.

Wienhold and two friends were canoeing on the lake on Monday, January 21 when one vessel capsized. An effort by passengers of the other boat to rescue the other resulted in the second vessel capsizing as well.

One man was able to swim to shore, but Weinhold and Kelton Sphaler were missing. Sphaler's body was recovered on January 22.

Our news partners at KWTX report that Weinhold, 24, was married and had been assigned to Fort Hood since March.

Sphaler, 25, of Cross City, Florida joined the Army in December of 2013 and was assigned to Fort Hood’s 4th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at the time of his death.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
