In light of recent tragic incidents in Abilene, including a shooting involving an armed security guard, many are questioning the training and responsibility required for licensed security guards in Texas. I, Rudy Fearless Fernandez, have carried a firearm in the past, learning through my concealed carry instructors, police officers, sheriff's deputies, and DPS troopers, that deadly force is always as a last resort, only to be used if one truly fears for their life or that of another. This core principle raises a vital question: "What training do Texas security guards undergo to handle life-threatening situations responsibly?"

Training Requirements

In Texas, there are two main types of security guards: non-commissioned (unarmed) and commissioned (armed). The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) oversees the licensing process, which requires guards to be employed by a licensed private security agency before they can obtain their credentials. Non-commissioned guards are required to complete six hours of training within two weeks of employment, covering topics necessary for working without a weapon.

Licensing and Renewal

For commissioned, armed security guards, the requirements are significantly stricter. They must complete 40 hours of training, including a firearms qualification test, before receiving their commission card. This card allows them to work armed and is valid for two years, after which it must be renewed. Despite being trained to carry a weapon, commissioned officers have limited powers, similar to those of a private citizen. This often means relying on the right to make a citizen's arrest in situations requiring intervention.

Given these recent events, understanding the responsibilities and training behind security guard certification is essential. Knowing the depth of training can shed light on both the safety precautions and legal boundaries that armed security guards in Texas must navigate daily.
