New Study Finds 90% of Texans Believe Housing is Unaffordable, Lawmakers Share Their Response
Have you noticed lately that the cost of... EVERYTHING is just a tad higher than previous years? Has that weekly date night turned into maybe once a month, or has your wallet become flatter than the shamefully thin "cutback" plastic grocery bags nowadays?
Let me tell you, you truly aren't alone.
Polling Data on Texas Housing Affordability
According to a recent poll conducted by the University of Houston and Texas Southern University, nine out of ten Texans believe housing affordability is a problem where they live.
Polling also showed that this a bi-partisan issue, as Democrats and Republicans both expressed concern over their situation, regardless of income, race or where they lived.
In fact, 88% of Democrats, 80% of Republicans and 72% of Independents all feel that housing costs are a rising problem in each of their neck of the woods.
While 20% of responses were undecided when it came to their preference for government intervention, 54% supported having government policies set in place to boost affordability. 26% opposed such government intervention.
When it came to renting vs. owning, 72% of renters stated they are under a financial strain in today's economy, while only 48% of homeowners said the same.
Texas Lawmaker's Response
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick expressed his concern on the matter of housing affordability, even going so far as to announce that the 98th Legislative Session will prioritize such matters, including continued property tax relief.
Patrick and Speaker Dade Phelan have both shown that they are open to relaxing city rules on house zoning regulations in order to allow more affordable homeowning/renting.
We'll just have to wait and see, because if I have to see my bank account perform it's famous Houdini trick one more time, so help me...
