The Texas heat has arrived in the state. While us Texans are used to the heat and can adjust our schedules to being in it, our pets are a different story. How can one make sure their dog is safe during the blistering hot Central Texas summer?

Why Are Summers Rough For Dogs In Central Texas?

As revealed by Stella & Chewy's, there are certain temperatures in the Lone Star State that could harm a dog. For example, if it's over 100 degrees in the state, walking a dog is not a good idea. This is because the pavement could be too hot for a dogs paws to be on.

In addition, bringing a dog into a hot car is never a good idea, so Stella & Chewy's recommends that one make sure their vehicle is cool so the dog can be comfortable during the ride. In addition, having water during hot days for your dog is always a good idea.

How Do You Know When Your Dog Is In Trouble During The Summer?

KXAN talked to a former President of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Dr. Rena Carlson, about how to help dogs during the hot Central Texas summer. When talking about summer in general:

"I think the most important thing is to really be prepared. Make sure you think through where you are going to be. What does the environment look like? How can you make sure that you’re avoiding problems?"

In addition to that, Dr. Carlson said: "You want to really be mindful of what your dog’s doing on these hot days (panting, acting restless, fatigue). I find pet owners really are very “in tune” to normal behaviors."
