Why Does Somebody In Texas Need A REAL ID?

Back in the year of 2005, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the United States Congress made the REAL Act a law. The good news? Texas began giving out these IDs in 2016.

The bad news? It's possible somebody in the state does not have one in their possession. So, by May 7th, 2025, everybody in the Lone Star State must have a REAL ID. But what makes an ID in Texas a Real ID?

How To Tell If You Have A Real ID In Texas

Thankfully, it's pretty easy to tell if you have a REAL ID in Texas. In the top right corner of your ID, if there's a gold circle with a star inside it, you're clear! But if your ID doesn't have it, there's still time to get one.

If you need to know how to get a REAL ID, here's a list items that you can use to get one, with info provided by the state itself:

- An original or certified copy of a Birth Certificate or an unexpired U.S. Passport Book or Card
- Social Security Card
- Current Texas Vehicle Registration or Title
- Current Car Insurance Policy or Car Insurance Statement
- If your name changed, legal documents showing proof of name change from your birth name

So, remember to get that REAL ID by May 7th, 2025 Texas!
