While Texas is gripped in the middle of a triple digit heat wave right as hurricane season is traditionally peaking the fine folks of the Lone Star State are now greeted with a whole new threat that is extremely toxic to humans and also a major threat to pets and livestock.

Similar to the species listed in the article linked just above, this new threat appears to have washed ashore while being carried in the chaos of Hurricane Beryl that made landfall recently.

The toxin is tetrofotoxin which is most commonly linked to puffer fish. It is not recommended to handle this new Texas inhabitant, and whatever you do, please, PLEASE, never cut them in half.

The hammerhead worm can grow to be well over a foot long, and they themselves can be riddled with parasites. If you ever come across one, you should find gloves to handle it, and immediately destroy it by submersion in vinegar or plain old iodized salt like we used to do to fortify our home from slugs in our childhood.

The reason you should not try to smash them or cut them in half is because they can regenerate into multiple worms, and then you could find yourself aiding their invasion. This Popular Mechanics article says the species is very challenging to eradicate once it takes hold in a region, and will severely damage the local ecosystem.
