Here’s Why Vampires Couldn’t Hack It in the Basin
If a vampire ever thought about calling Midland-Odessa home, they’d literally be in for a rude awakening. It is more than likely that it probably wouldn't end well for them.
Between the endless sunshine, the fiery skies at dusk, and a culture built around being outside, West Texas might be the most hostile place on earth for creatures of the night, such as a vampire.

Though this scenario may seem absurd, let's suspend disbelief since Halloween is approaching and imagine this is a real situation that could actually happen.
What Problems Would Vampires Face in West Texas?
#1. The Sun
Easily the biggest issue a vampire in West Texas would face is the sun. Vampires are known to be hurt by direct sunlight, and that is one thing that we have plenty of. This could possibly be a life-challenging obstacle.
Then you throw in the terrain and lack of vegetation, such as trees, and this becomes exceedingly problematic.
The vast plains lack shade, something that a vampire would need if he or she were trapped outside during the daytime.
Moreover, Midland-Odessa enjoys over 260 bright, cloudless days a year, making life difficult for nocturnal creatures. For vampires, they would quickly be reminded that Midland-Odessa is not merely sun-drenched; it is sun-obsessed.
#2. Heat That Lasts After Dark
West Texas gets hot! ☀️
With a nocturnal being such as a vampire, let's assume they are more accustomed to cooler weather since they typically roam around at night.
In West Texas, heat indexes can easily go into the hundreds during the day and while it cools down at night, some heat can still linger.
Twilight hours retain warmth, often extending past 8 p.m., forcing vampires to rely on industrial-grade sunscreen for even brief outings, like trips to H-E-B.
However, they only have until 11 pm when H-E-B closes to do so.
#3. The Community
There is no doubt that if a real vampire made Midland-Odessa its home, they would take out numerous residents of the 4-3-2.
However, once this was recognized, its more than likely that the people of Midland-Odessa would band together to take it out.
You might even see an old school pitchfork campaign joining forces like you see in the movies. Given how this is West Texas, I'm pretty sure more than just pitchforks would be brought to the fight.
