At a Copperas Cove public hearing on Thursday, the proposed $52.8 million budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year was discussed, and a nearly two cent property tax increase was officially proposed by the council.

A resident questioned what was being done to decrease expenditures, rather than raising taxes, and City Manager Andrea Gardner responded that about 20 positions had been removed in the city since Gardner became City Manager.

In the budget, revenues were estimated at $14.9 million, with expenses of $16.1 million. To help fund the deficit, a property tax rate of 77.74 cents per $100 assessed property value was proposed, representing an increase of 1.74 cents.
