Business for Big Creek Construction in Lorena carried on as usual Monday despite a fire that destroyed costly equipment Sunday afternoon.

The fire started around 4:30 p.m. at 1617 Old Temple Rd. inside a cement truck and quickly spread to other trucks parked in close proximity. By the time Lorena fire crews extinguished the flames, 8 of 12 cement trucks in the company’s fleet had been destroyed at an estimated cost of $800,000.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the owner of the business, John Miller, believes an electrical short inside one of the trucks is to blame.

Big Creek Construction specializes in highway construction and works closely with TxDOT. Miller said in an interview with a local TV station that he has already ordered 6 new trucks to replace those destroyed by the fire.
