10-Year-Old Girl Takes Bullet to Protect Baby Brother
10-year-old Aaliyah Inghram of Las Vegas, Nevada is being hailed as a hero after she used her body to shield her little brother from gunfire. She and her mother were shot. Thankfully, both survived and the baby is ok.
KVVU-TV reports that it happened in a Walmart parking lot Tuesday. Aaliyah's mother, Samantha Tygrit, was loading up the family's car while the kids sat inside. Suddenly, a gun fight started, and Samantha was shot in the shoulder.
Being a mother, she ignored the wound and ran to her kids. She pulled her 4-year-old out of the vehicle and got her safely to the ground. When she turned to get Aaliyah, the girl told her she'd been shot. She had placed herself on top of her 18-month-old baby brother, preventing his little body from being struck by bullets.
"I didn’t want the baby to get hurt so I like stepped in front of the babies," Aaliyah told KVVU. "If I wouldn’t have stood in front of my brother, he would have been shot in the stomach.
Aaliyah proved to be as tough as her mom. She said she felt as if she'd been hit very hard, and didn't even realize she'd been shot until she saw her blood. Thankfully, she and her mom are doing well and recovering.
"Good thing that my brother’s okay because I would rather be shot than him be shot," Aaliyah said.
Two of Aaliyah's cousins were in the vehicle as well. They were reportedly safe and sound after the incident.
According to KVVU, the shooting appears to have been gang related. One of the gunmen was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police were still searching for a second suspect.
