I've been trying to find a silver lining when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic. As someone who cares for a parent who's at high risk for deadly complications, that can be difficult.

One thing I've tried to be positive about is the opportunity for people to learn to be kinder, whether that kindness is directed toward the people we've taken for granted in our lives or complete strangers we know need our help.

People we should definitely show kindness and respect to right now are essential workers. Hospital staff, truckers, delivery drivers, grocery store employees, restaurant workers...the list could go on for miles.

I could write volumes about things we can do to help folks in all those positions, but for now I'm going to focus on grocery store employees. We're all under a tremendous amount of stress, anxiety, and pressure right now, but how many of us have to deal with customers facing those issues while putting on a brave face?

Here are five things we should avoid doing while grocery shopping to make life a little easier for these workers.
