The Bell County Sheriff's Department has used a $40,000 Homeland Security grant to buy a license plate reader, but don't worry if the reader catches you speeding, they say they won't be issuing speeding tickets as if it were a red light camera.

Rather, they tell our news partners at KWTX that the plate reader will be used for traffic surveys and to help law enforcement locate cars linked to AMBER Alerts, Silver Alerts, and reports of criminal activity.

The city of Salado installed its machines last December.

Remember, back in 2019, the Texas legislature outlawed red light cameras.

This new reader won't hit taxpayers' pockets either, so why not?

According to Bell County Sheriff Lt. Robert Mcclinton, license plates will be entered into a system as the vehicle passes a key will notify the agency.

The license plate readers will be moved in Bell County where needed for investigations.

Reportedly officials are registering national and state databases before the machine will be deployed.
