Just North of San Antonio is the beautiful Canyon Lake and Canyon Dam. Explosives were used a little over 50 years ago in order to create a spillway for what was to become the 6,830-foot long Canyon Dam.

Canyon Lake is one of the more popular lakes in Central Texas today, and we've been fortunate enough to find some telling photos that led to the solution of negating dangerous flooding along the Guadalupe River. The project cost $20.2 million.

We've unearthed some photos from the Corps of Engineers of what it looked like before water was added. Canyon Dam was under construction for six years between 1958 and 1964.
