A Hewitt police officer is reportedly in stable condition after being shot while responding to a bank robbery Tuesday morning.

Our news partners at KWTX-TV report that the suspect opened fire as the officer arrived at Pointwest Bank, 420 North Hewitt Drive. The officer returned fire and was hit, after which the suspect fled the scene in a truck. Police believe the man was armed with a shotgun.

The officer was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco.

The suspect was captured shortly after crashing his getaway vehicle into a home at the intersection of Garden Drive and Wingate Drive.

The suspect fled the scene of the crash on foot, but was quickly apprehended.

Meanwhile, nearby Midway ISD schools were locked down, as were University High School and Alta Vista Elementary.

Police continued to investigate the scene of the crash late Tuesday morning.
