Beware of Riding in Truck Beds in the Big Country: It’s the Law

In West Texas, riding in the back of a pickup truck may seem like a fun idea, but it's important to know that it's illegal and carries strict penalties. Texas law mandates that all passengers inside a vehicle, regardless of age, must be properly restrained by a seatbelt or an appropriate car seat. Specifically, passengers aged 17 and under are prohibited from riding in an open pickup truck bed, an open flatbed truck, or an open flatbed trailer.

There are, however, a few exceptions to this rule. These include participation in parades, driving slowly on a beach, hayrides with county permits, and certain types of farm work. If you're caught violating this law, the offense is classified as a misdemeanor. The first offense fine for the vehicle operator ranges from $25 to $200.

Interestingly, while human passengers face these restrictions, pets are allowed to ride in the bed of a pickup truck throughout Texas without any penalties or violations. Texas law does not restrict or prohibit animals from riding unrestrained in open truck beds or trailers.

However, it’s worth noting that some cities have specific ordinances that restrict or prohibit the transportation of animals in this manner. For example, Dallas does not allow the unsecured transportation of pets in open truck beds. To ensure the safety of your pet and compliance with local laws, it’s recommended to check with the Texas Veterinary Medical Association for guidelines on securing pets in truck beds and trailers.

The American Veterinary Medical Association advises that all pets should be secured in a kennel when traveling in an open truck bed or harnessed inside the vehicle to prevent injury and ensure their safety.
