The high school basketball season has been underway for almost a month now, and several Deep East Texas area teams are getting some recognition in the statewide rankings.

Texas High School Boy's Basketball Rankings

No area teams are in the top 25 rankings in the 5A or 4A conferences. By the way, we're using the standings from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Hudson has started the season hot with a perfect 5-0 mark. That includes wins against Crockett (#25 in Class 3A) and LaPoyner (#15 in Class 2A), but it hasn't been enough for the Hornets to punch through rankings.

Class 3A Boys Basketball

In Class 3A, the Bulldogs of Crockett check in at #25. Crockett is 2-1 on the young season. I had a chance to watch them play against Hudson, and they are loaded with athleticism and outstanding shooters. It's only November, but I could see them making a deep run in the playoffs come March.

It should also be noted that even though Pollok Central is not ranked in Class 3A, don't be surprised to see them when the next rankings come out. The Bulldogs are playing well to start the season with six wins in seven games.

Class 2A Boys Basketball

Several teams from the Pineywoods are included in the top 25 for Class 2A. The Timpson Bears crack the top 5 on potential alone. Timpson will not play their first basketball game for at least a couple of weeks due to their deep run in the football playoffs. Shelbyville who is ranked 19th had their football season end a week ago, so they will play their first basketball game a few days before December.

The Wildcats of Big Sandy (Dallardsville) are ranked #14 in Class 2A, while the Sandies of Grapeland check in at #22. Those two teams have records of 3-1 and 2-2, respectively.

Class A Boys Basketball

In Class A basketball, the Brookeland Wildcats are the lone East Texas team in the top 25, checking in with a 5-1 record at #15. Last year, the Wildcats were the Area Champs in the UIL Playoffs. They made that run with a very young team, so expect great things from Brookeland this year.

Texas High School Girl's Basketball Rankings

According to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Rankings, no teams from the Pineywoods are in the top 25 for Class 5A or 4A. However, it should be noted that Jacksonville is ranked #18 in Class 4A. The Maidens are a perfect 10-0 on the season and Rusk and Hudson are included in their district.

Class 3A Girls Basketball

Pineywoods Community Academy and Huntington are included in the latest top 25 rankings for Class 3A. PCA has compiled an impressive 7-2 record and that has the Wolves at #16 in the state. Meanwhile, Huntington checks in at #23 with a 5-2 record

Class 2A Girls Basketball

Four teams from Deep East Texas are represented in the top 25 state rankings. Let's start with Tenaha. The Lady Tigers check in at number 5 with an 8-2 record, and these ladies are amazing. They have been regularly whipping up on teams from much bigger schools.

Their two losses were one-point defeats to Class 6A schools (Austin Vandergrift and Mesquite Horn). If these ladies continue to gel and improve, we could be talking a lot about Tenaha deep into March.

Other area 2A schools include Chireno (#10) with a 3-1 record, Douglass (#12) with a 7-1 start, and Dallardsville Big Sandy (#14) with a 3-2 record.

Class 1A Girls Basketball

Brookeland is ranked 18th in the statewide Class A poll. The Lady 'Cats have a 5-2 mark and are looking to make another playoff run this year.
