What You Can’t Bring Into Texas Might Surprise You

As someone who has never lived outside of Texas, I put very little thought into what might or might not be allowed into the state. I mean, we have open carry gun laws, we have distilleries and breweries all over, we have exotic pet owners like the Tiger King, so I couldn't really imagine what wouldn't be allowed to be brought into the Lone Star State. Boy, was I in for a surprise...

I recently came across a list from HireAHelper that outlined the things that weren't allowed.

Some of the Things Weren't Surprising

A few of the things on the list made a lot of sense, really quickly. For example, you can't bring in undeclared alcohol. Obviously, if you're coming across state lines with large amounts of alcohol, you have to declare it. I totally get that. Also, you can't bring in unvaccinated and/or unleashed dogs and cats. Again, I understand. It becomes a real safety thing, especially during travel.

I even understand not being allowed to bring in firewood from out of state. Being in the Pineywoods, I know what a problem invasive pests like beetles and weevils can be. It doesn't take much for some of them to completely ruin timber and become a costly problem.

Then the List Took a Surprising Turn

It is actually illegal to bring citrus fruit trees into Texas. I mean, yes, you can go through a process of inspection and certification to get them in, but even then there are restrictions. I suppose it makes sense, similar to the firewood; you don't want to bring in outside diseases or other infestations. But, getting fined because you hauled orange trees across the state line? I can only imagine having to pay that fine and show up for court simply for bringing in citrus plants...

Just make sure that if you are traveling into Texas from out-of-state that you aren't hauling any contraband orange or lemon trees. It'll just be a lot easier - and cheaper - to buy new plants once you're back in Texas.
