Texas Counties With the Most Tornadoes Since the Year 2000
If you're considering a move to Texas, or a career change to become a storm chaser, there are some stats you might want to check out.
Let's rank out what counties in Texas see the most tornados.
Texas Counties With The Most Tornado Activity
Since the year 2000, the state of Texas has been pummeled with tornados. Actually, the state has always been hit with tornados, but over the course of time, weather patterns have changed, which means who in Texas is getting hit with tornados has changed over time. So we're going to focus on the last 25 years.
We're also going to cut our info off a the end of May 2025, to make things even across the board.
Measuring Tornados Per 100 Square Miles In Texas
One of the other things we need to keep in mind is that Texas is a very large state, with very large counties. But mixed in are some smaller counties too. We're not talking about population (although the statement on size differences remains true for that), we're talking about land size. Some counties have way more square miles than others.
So for this, we're going to measure the number of tornados per 100 square miles. Again, to try and make things equal for all counties, no matter their total size.
Because imagine measuring the total numbers for someone like Brewster County with 6,192 square miles, or Hudspeth County with 4,571 square miles, against Rockwall County, with an area of 147 square miles or Loving County with 677 square miles.
Statistically, What Texas County See The Most Tornados?
That means these rankings will be based on tornados per 100 square miles, in every Texas County, between January 1st, 2000 and May 31st, 2025. A solid 25 years of data, evenly measured for the whole state.
Here's what the data says...
